We address your daily life, not just some exercises in a clinic

I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to learn to perform daily activity from the correct positions and using correct movement patterns for your unique body. Doing the exercises prescribed as part of your treatment strategy is essential, but it is not enough; you must be able to carry your new knowledge and movement patterns over into your daily life, now and in the future.

Every one of us has a daily life of repetitive movement patterns. You may sit in front of a computer all day, or stand behind a counter. You may carry a heavy purse, a briefcase, a baby, or a backpack. You may stock shelves in a store or a kitchen. In your free time you may play tennis, ride a bike, kneel in a garden, or watch television. The list is endless, yet every activity you engage in – especially if repetitive – has the potential to cause pain or dysfunction if performed in a way that is not ideal for your individual body.

The focus of Fundamental Motion is to identify movement patterns that are causing your pain or functional limitations – and those that may cause problems in the future – and replace them with the ideal, comfortable movement patterns that your individual body was designed to use. However, just because we are able to teach your body to use new, pain-free movement patterns during exercises at the clinic, does not automatically mean that those ideal patterns will transfer over to your daily life and your daily movements. You must move/sit/stand/work/play correctly in order to diminish the forces that cause pain or functional limitation.

That’s why your treatment is not limited to just exercises at our office. Instead, we actively address the movement patterns in your daily life as well. We identify them, discuss them, and practice doing them correctly so that when you are out living your life, you can do so confidently with ideal movements and postural habits that are less likely to cause problems now or in the future.

You do not need a prescription to be evaluated or treated by a licensed physical therapist in the state of Maryland. However, you may need one from your insurance company if you plan to apply for reimbursement.
